An 8 year ride for kids

Put an end to Bullying & Adolescent Suicide

In year 3 of this mission, I introduced a bicycle ride to my travels to raise
awareness about issues kids are having to deal with at far too young an age.
Bullying and Adolescent Suicide are two of these challenging burdens most kids
will unfairly have to overcome throughout the remainder of their lives. At rides
end we will have ridden enough miles to traveled the perimeter of the earth, twice.
My mission on this ride has but one focus: To save kids lives.

George Hall Elementary School, Mobile Alabama

February 25th, 2013
2-25-13Thanks to a brief encounter, yesterday, with George Hall Elementary School teacher, Jinkle Jones, I did a morning program for about 300, 3rd – 5th graders today. I stressed reasons for living a life of kindness rather than concentrating on bullying. The message was very well received.
Thank you to Principal Agnes Tomlinson for the last minute invite to her school.
I made my way into Mississippi followed by heavy rain showers and occasional lightning, which made riding a bit challenging to say the least.

Mobile, Alabama

2-24-13Dauphin Street is the main attraction for foot traffic in Mobile. Because of the warm weather, the street was busy. I love having conversations with people about the reasons I am riding for an awareness of Bullying and Adolescent Suicide. It seems as if everyone has been affected by one or both of these issues. Talking about these issues educates as well as heals those affected.
Melinda gave me an applause as I rode by as she was having lunch. She told me how important it is for everyone to get involved.
Katrina, a local rescue dog supporter, loved Bogart and every aspect of my mission.
Jinkle, a local elementary school teacher invited me to visit her school tomorrow. I’m looking forward to talking with these 3rd – 5th graders.
Reporter Jason Garcia from the CBS affiliate, WKRG 5 Mobile, interviewed and filmed me for well over an hour. This will help get word out to this gulf community.

Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida

February 23rd, 2013

2-23-13I rolled The Kindness Bus onto this college campus on this rainy Saturday morning. Parking is a major challenge so while spending over an hour for suitable spot, I made the most of it by trying to make The Kindness Bus highly visible. When finally parked, I set off on The Kindness Bicycle. I talked with everyone within earshot. The music department was having auditions so I worked that captive audience. Girls from Kappa Kappa Gamma and Alpha Chi Omega were gathered, waiting for their shuttle bus to take them to a western party, so I made The Kindness Bicycle visible to all of them.
The skies opened up, on and off, the remainder of the day. So I rode and took cover when I could. On one of my stops, I met Officer Mike from the Bike Unit of the Tallahassee Police Department. Hats off to the TPD for the important work they do.
Great conversations ensued with everyone throughout this day. Another great visit to a college campus.

University of Florida

February 22nd, 2013

2-22-13It has been almost 3 years to the day that I last visited this campus in Gainesville, Florida. I had today only, to be here, so I made the most of it. The local student run school newspaper, The Alligator, was my first contact. Colleen Wright, a political reporter came out and spent nearly an hour interviewing me about all the details of One Million Acts Of Kindness.
Rachel, Bardia and Sylvia stopped by to connect and take many photos.
Larissa, a Rachel’s Challenge volunteer was thrilled to learn of my Bullying and Adolescent Suicide ride.
Karissa who was wearing a, To Write Love on Her Arms, tee shirt is doing her part to help those who are being bullied.
Thank you to students, Todd and Stacy who prayed for the continued success of my mission.
So many students I talked to today are doing incredible work for others.
I managed to hand out over 200 flyers and have just as many conversations.
It was a great day on this campus, even Bogart thought so, keeping all of the squirrels in their trees.

Friends Along the Way

February 21st, 2013

2-21-13The Kindness Bus and Kindness Bicycle create an attraction as I drive and ride my way around the country. The words written on both, lead to conversations from people in need and people wanting to know more of my mission. Because of their positive messages, they oftentimes lead to friendship.
Two years ago I met Scott and Paula Hasselbring and because of the strong connection to the writings on The Kindness Bus and the conversation which ensued, a friendship was forged. We have kept in touch through email and phone calls, but I made sure my travels took me through Cocoa Beach to spend some quality time in person with them. When you are putting a message of kindness and love out to the world, you are bound to meet the most caring of individuals. Scott and Paula certainly embody those two attributes. Thank you to them for their hospitality and the generosity in helping to support my mission.
The Kindness Bus and Kindness Bicycle rolled its way to Ocala, Florida as I will now visit a town a day for the next several days.

North to Cocoa Beach, Florida

February 20th, 2013

2-20-13I spent the morning getting The Kindness Bus road ready, mechanically for the long distances I will be traveling over the next several months. It is hard to believe that Florida has been home for almost 4 months. The weather, I’m hoping should now be mild enough as I make my way across the southern United States over the course if the next month.
A big thank you to the crew at Treasure Coast Automotive for applying their combined collective mechanical knowledge to the solving of the “aches and pains” that The Kindness Bus has been having.
Another big thank you to Rodger of Vero Beach for all of his support and interest in my mission, since learning of it late last year.

The Health of Veterans

February 19th, 2013

2-19-13Today’s shorter than usual ride took me to the Indian River County Health Administration offices for visits to a couple of departments to tell them of my ride. Great interest in the message of my ride was evident throughout the offices.
One of my other stops was to a Vero Beach Veterans group. The friendly group invited me in for refreshments and conversation. We talked of the challenge of returning back to society and settling into a life similar to what they had when they left. Many veterans are having a difficult time reconnecting with family, friends and community.
If you have a chance to make the life of a veteran easier, do so. Many need housing, jobs, a helping hand up…all of them could use another friend.
