An 8 year ride for kids

Put an end to Bullying & Adolescent Suicide

In year 3 of this mission, I introduced a bicycle ride to my travels to raise
awareness about issues kids are having to deal with at far too young an age.
Bullying and Adolescent Suicide are two of these challenging burdens most kids
will unfairly have to overcome throughout the remainder of their lives. At rides
end we will have ridden enough miles to traveled the perimeter of the earth, twice.
My mission on this ride has but one focus: To save kids lives.

7-22-13It is said that everyone in the world has a twin. The same will hold true about The Kindness Bus beginning this upcoming winter in Florida. Funds will need to be raised from now through March to purchase a bus and transform it to replicate as closely as possible, the original Kindness Bus…Spread the word!
It is my hope, to donate the existing Kindness Bus to an organization, to be used as an educational tool for kids to learn about kindness, love and respect…and so much more.

Bring a Grown Man to Tears

July 21st, 2013

7-21-13A man who stopped for traffic across from the parked Kindness Bus gave me a thumbs up as I sat in the driver’s seat. I pointed to the words beneath the driver’s window in today’s photo.
I could see him tearing up as his lips read the words to his grandchildren in his car. He tapped his heart a few times with his hand, while everyone in the car waved as he slowly pulled away.
It was clear that my wish, is his wish as well.

Yesterday Was His Birthday

July 20th, 2013

A woman in her 70s approached me while walking Bogart through Sausalito yesterday. “Is that your bus and bike?” she said. After talking briefly about my mission, she said, “Yesterday was my son’s birthday, he would have been 47. He took his life 25 years ago.” She told me how she and her daughter celebrate his life on his birthday every year as it is a way to remember all of the good he did in his life. She talked of grandchildren that could have been and how she still feels it was such a waste after all these years.
She asked if I could write this story, with the belief that it might help just one person from taking their life. She said, “Because you will make those who love you, question themselves what they did wrong and what they should have done differently the rest of their lives, even if you tell them it wasn’t their fault in your suicide note.”

Kindness on the High Seas

July 19th, 2013

7-19-13The America’s Cup and preliminary races are in San Francisco through mid September. I am meeting people throughout the world who are taking a message of kindness, love and respect back to their respective countries…they are getting kindness stickers as well. It’s a perfect way of getting notoriety for this mission without spending 10 million dollars, as major sponsors do.
Martin, an avid junior sailor from Rowayton, Connecticut, on the Atlantic side of the United States, has been taking kindness out on the high seas for a couple of years now. Thank you Martin, for giving one of the kindness stickers, a prominent spot on Sweet Pea, your beetlecat sailboat.

Standing Up to Bullying

July 18th, 2013

7-18-13Anyone can stand up to bullying, no matter the age. Many of the schools I visit have this as their centerpiece to being a deterrent to bullying. The “See something, say something” programs are very popular across the nation. It thwarts a situation before the bullying can have a long term adverse affect.
Cal State, Long Beach professor, Jordan Smith and family stopped by and talked with me about the Bullying sign on The Kindness Bicycle. He and his wife teach their children to help with those who are bullied, adopting the “See something, say something” philosophy. The children are blessed to have such loving parents and vice versa.

For Her School

July 17th, 2013

7-17-13Today was one of those perfect weather days in Sausalito, where tourists come over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco in droves.
I had a hundred or so conversations and thousands of views of the perfectly placed Kindness Bus and also while riding The Kindness Bicycle.
Sara a student majoring in Public Relations at Virginia Tech was happy to see the largest sign of The Kindness Bus which proclaims “Because of Virginia Tech…end all forms of hatred!” She was happy to know that awareness was still being raised for her school.
Tom Riddle, a lifelong educator at Furman University and Shannon Forest Christian School stopped by with his wife, Angela, who is an educator in a middle school in Geeenville, South Carolina. They loved its message of kindness and the importance of altruism.
The ties The Kindness Bus has to educators is solid. They know the importance of teaching kids with respect and kindness.
