Today I visited 6 Firehouses in Manhattan. I started early this Sunday morning to get out before the traffic of the day. This couldn’t have worked better, allowing me to move with ease around this crowded city.
One of my first stops was to the Midtown West area of Manhattan, known as Hell’s Kitchen. Captain Craig of the Hell’s Kitchen Firehouse and I talked about teaching kids about Heroes. It is part of what kids should be hearing much more of.
I also visited the Firehouse, also known as The Batcave which houses Engine 26 of the FDNY. Firefighters John and Steve were thrilled to talk about my ride across country and the next 3 months I will spend visiting all 212 Firehouses and 76 Police Precincts in the 5 boroughs of New York City. I love the way in which these Heroes at all the Precincts, Firehouses and Veterans organizations “light up” when The Kindness Bicycle rolls into their buildings. These individuals just aren’t thanked enough these days.
